The son of a Wesleyan Methodist minister, George McGovern was born in Avon, South Dakota, on July 19, 1922. In his youth, he was an outstanding student, and his proficiency in debate won him a scholarship at Dakota Weslyan University. World War II interrupted McGovern's education in 1943. He flew 35 combat missions as a B-24 bomber pilot in Europe, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. Kenneth Wyatt's spiritual journey mirrors his own life lesson to "stay within the will of the Father." At the age of 14, Kenneth was first called to ministry, licensed as a local pastor, then appointed to a local church in central Texas … all within the span of two weeks. At the direction of that same calling, he found himself 30 years later, pursuing a new ministry in art. [more] Cal Turner Cal Turner, chairman of the Cal Turner Family Foundation and the retired Chairman and CEO of Dollar General Corporation, shares his faith story. In 1939, Mr. Turner's father and grandfather began work as wholesalers of basic dry goods when they formed J.L. Turner & Son in Scottsville, Kentucky. Third generation Cal Turner, Jr. joined the company in 1965 and became a director one year later. In 1968, the company changed its name to Dollar General Corporation and went public. Today there are more than 6300 Dollar General stores located throughout the U.S.[more] Judy O'Bannon Judy O'Bannon, former first lady of the state of Indiana, shares her faith story. A longtime member of southern Indiana's Corydon United Methodist Church, Judy has spent her life as a community activist and volunteer, advocating for such issues as education, the environment and community development. As a result of her leadership, she has lead community-building delegations to such places as South Africa and Moldova in Eastern Europe. Williams, 89, a longtime member of Good Hope UnionUnited Methodist Churchin Silver Spring, Md., grew up working on the North Carolina farm his father inherited from his grandfather, a freed slave. He played in the racially segregated Negro Leagues from 1937 to 1941, mostly for the Newark (N.J.) Eagles, but also for the Birmingham (Ala.) Black Barons and Atlanta Black Crackers. [more] Mike McCurry Mike McCurry, former White House press secretary to President Bill Clinton, shares his faith story. Having held his dream job at age 40, this cradle United Methodist and former spokesman for the U.S. Department of State is finding as much fulfillment following life in the White House. Now Sunday school superintendent for his home church in Kensington, Md., McCurry is also consultant for a number of major corporations and non-profits. [more] Dr. Joycelyn Elders The daughter of an Arkansas sharecropper, Dr. Elders was the first African American to serve as Surgeon General. In this position, she argued the case for universal health coverage, and was a strong advocate for comprehensive health education, including sex education in schools. [more] Dr. Loren Acton Dr. Loren Acton, former astronaut aboard the Challenger, shares his faith story. Now a professor at Montana State University, Dr. Acton, during the summer of 1985, had the privilege to serve as payload specialist for the Spacelab-2 mission which traveled over 2.8 million miles in 126 orbits of Earth. [more] Steve Tasker Best known as a member of the Buffalo Bills, Steve Tasker played in four Super Bowls and seven Pro Bowls. With his football days now in the past, he shares the life-lessons learned with his five children, various local ministries and his ever-present church family. [more] Rev. Jim Newton The Rev. Jim Newton, a United Methodist pastor and founder of Celebration Shop, Inc., a Texas-based organization providing healing experiences for children with special needs through the performing arts shares his faith story. James Lawson, United Methodist pastor and civil rights justice leader, shares his faith story. A counterpart of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., James Lawson played a primary role in the Civil Rights Movement. Now retired, he continues to teach non-violence and fight for the rights of the oppressed. From her home in southwest Virginia, Janette shares some of the Carter family stories chronicling not only seven generations of United Methodism, but a bit of Americana as well. The daughter of a preacher, Lina recalls her memories of the Central Jurisdiction and the segregation she experienced growing up. One of the first black employees hired at the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, Lina helped pioneer the Black College Fund intern program. Many of us enjoy some form of secular entertainment. For the Rev. Janna Steed the line that separates the sacred from the secular all but disappeared when she made an accidental discovery.
