Texas Annual Conference

May 31-June 3, Houston


The Texas Annual Conference met May 31–June 3 at First United Methodist Church, Houston, West Campus. An Evangelism Worship Service featuring the Rev. Walter Kimbrough, on Sunday, May 30, 2004, preceded the conference.


The conference honored Bishop Alfred L. Norris and Mackie Norris with an evening celebration June 1. A video review of the ministries and missions carried out by local congregations the past four years was presented. Guests honoring the Norrises upon their retirement included Neil Alexander, Sandra Lackore, the Rev. Mary Ann Moman, Bishop William W. Hutchinson, Bishop Ben Oliphint and Bishop Woodrow Hearn.


In conference business, a “Conference and District Safe Sanctuary” policy was adopted. Also, a task force was appointed to study a Congregational Development plan. The task force will prepare a report for the 2005 Annual Conference.


Twenty-five ministers retired. FE-14; FD-3; OE-1; AM-2; DM- 2; FTLP-1; PTLP-2


Nine ministers were ordained elder and three were ordained deacon. Fifteen persons were commissioned in their journey to becoming elders.


The Texas Conference ended 2003 with a total membership of 290,227, an increase of 2,747. This is the fifth straight year of membership growth and 6,075 were received by profession of faith. Average worship attendance was 111,268 and average Sunday school attendance was 53,892.
